Bedard and Gibbons for Abreu?

Rumors have been floating around the internet that have the O's are discussing a deal with the phils for Bobby Abreu. The O's would give up Erik Bedard and Jay Gibbons. With no further moves, there is no reason to do this deal. Lets check out each player.

Erik Bedard-Even though his stats haven't been dazzling, he was lights out at the start of last year(his ERA was below 2.1 for a while). He also has lots of talent and I think he will have a breakout year. Why hire Mazzone if you won't let him work with talent?

Jay Gibbons-Jay had a spectacular season last year. His OPS was over .800 and his HR total got all the way to 26. I think that Jay Gibbons is very comparable to Bobby Abreu. Also, a recent Baltimore Sun article says Jay will soon sign a 3 year, 15 million dollar deal. This is a complete steal.

Bobby Abreu-Bobby Abreu is a good player. His OPS over his career is over .900. (Note:it dropped over .70 points last year) He got over 30 SB's last year, but also struck out over 100 times in each of the last 8 years. Definitely not something the O's need. He also got 24 HR's. One perk to him is that he started in every game last year.

Now contrary to what I have already said, there is one way I do this deal. If the O's aquire Jeff Weaver and Kris Benson(for Jorge Julio) then I guess I support this move. That would not only fill out our rotation but also give us a slight upgrade in offense. No matter what happens, I bet it will be interesting.

Go O's!
