Not in fitz over Burnitz

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the O's are close to signing Jeromy Burnitz to a 2 year, 12 million dollar deal.

My thoughts on the player:Jeromy Burnitz Is a good signing in my opinion. Last year he provided some pretty nice pop with 24 HR's and a .435 SLG%. His OPS did lack luster last year, but at .915 2 years ago I will take it. Another thing, he is getting old, but over his career he has averaged 31 HR's, 95 RBI's, and an .833 OPS. I think his numbers took a hit last year in Wrigley with the swirling winds.

My thoughts on the contract:I don't like it. 2 years to a 37 year old is too long. Giving 6 mil. to a guy who will be 39 isn't a spectacular idea. I would absolutely love this if it were more around 1/4, but it's not, so I don't.

All in all:The O's needed to make this move. Bringing up on of the Markakis or Majewski too soon is the perfect way to ruin a prospect. He can provide a solid SLG% with 20-25 HR's and is also a lefty bat that the O's need. All in all, this is a good move.

Tejada:
Looks like Miggy is staying put. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the O's are talking about trading him to a few teams, mainly the red sox and cubs. The cubs are pursuing most aggressively, but the sides seem too far apart to complete a deal. The O's are most intrigued with a offer from the sawks for Matt Clement and Manny Ramirez. Alot of people in the warehouse, though, don't want to trade Tejada in the division. I think that the Manny trade is now nullified with the probable Burnitz signing.

O's sign Jeff Conine

The deal is worth 1/1.75. This would be OK if they didn't spend a month on it. Why not offer this 3 weeks ago? That wastes time that could have been well spent on Millwood.

Other news:

-O's non-tender Eric Byrnes, Kurt Ainsworth, and Eddy Rodriguez. No big shocker there.

-Don't be shocked if Nick Markakis is the opening day starting LF.

-Johnny Damon signs with the yankees for 4/52...yeah, good luck with that one.

News from today...

-David Newhan, the below mentioned Gil, and John Parrish were signed to one-year deals today. I like the Parrish and Newhan signings. Parrish will be helpful in long-relief or spot starts, and Newhan has lots and lots of speed off the bench, but the most signifigant signing is Gil. This either means that Javy Lopez will be traded or Gil will go to the minors. If Javy is traded and Gil takes his spot, it leaves a huge offensive void in the middle of the lineup. This needs to be filed with either a power hitting 1B or OF(Preferably 1B).

-Several minor signings were made also.
2B Eddy Garabito
OF Keith Reed
RHP John Stephens
1B Alejandro Freije
RHP Orber Moreno
RHP Winston Abreu
OF Howie Clark
3B Napoleon Calzado
C Brandon Marsters
Quick notes about htme...Keith Reed, Napoleon Calzado, and Alejandro Freije all played for the Orioles in short stints last season...John Stephens is I believe an Aussie who was an Oriole 3 or 4 years ago...Howie Clark is also an Oriole from 3 or 4 years ago...Abreau pitched 659 innings with 769 K's and 334 BB's!

-According to ESPN Wade Miller will be non-tendered by the Sawks. I think he will be a good option for the Orioles, and he can be dominating if he can stay away from the injury bug. Also, he would most likely come cheap.

-Acoording to ESPN, Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez, and Terrmel Sledge were traded to San Diego for Akinori Otsuka and Adam Eaton. That crosses another option off the O's list(In Gonzalez). :-(

-Eric Byrnes will most likely be be non-tendered tonight, and Jim Duquette has hinted that Nick Markakis could play a signifigant role next season.(PS, leave a comment if you know when non-tenders get annunced)

-And finally, Kevin Millwood visited Texas yesterday, but it is also being reported (by me)that the O's have given him an offer. These are the only to teams to show interest post-Washburn signing.

I'm thinking Arby's

With two days until the arbitration deadline, I'm thinking Arby's. For the Orioles, there is only 1 question...Do they non-tender Gil or Byrnes?

Let's start off with Gil. There are currently 4 catchers on the O's 40 man roster(Lopez, Hernandez, Whiteside, Gil). There is 1 circum stance that I keep Gil-IF Lopez is traded. There is no need to keep a offensively challenged catcher with no upside unless you have no backup. The one thing I don't understand is why the O's didn't try to re-sign Sal Fasano. Yes, his defense might be poor, but 11 bombs for a backup catcher is very very good. Let's compare Gil and Fasano.

Gil-125 AB's, 4 HR's, .192 Avg., 17 RBI's and 7 Run's.
Fasano-160 AB's, 11 HR's, .250 Avg., 20 RBI's and 25 Runs

Fasano is better in every stat. Why don't he O's keep Fasano? THere are 2 possible reasons-
1. Flanny is on crack
2.The O's don't plan on trading Javy.
Personally, I think it is #2:-)

Now to Byrnes. There is one way the O's non-tender Byrnes-They are planning on signing another LF. The reason I say that is becuase in Byrnes last season where he had a full-time home, he hit .283 with a .817 OPS, and he had 20 HR's and 17 steals. Don't forget that he kills lefties. Also, he leaves it all and more out on the field. If you have never watched him play, you need too. He has a cannon arm and makes spectacular plays regularly in the field.

If they were planning on signing another LF, it would be one of these guys:
Rondell White
Jeromy Burnitz
Jeff Conine(gag)
Jacque Jones
Reggie Sanders
Preston Wilson

If I had to pick the best 2 it would be White and Sanders. But I think it is safe to say that we all know the FO will get Burnitz and 'Niner because they are "gamers" and "Old as dirt"...OK, maybe they won't say that.

Right now there are lots of question marks, but the great thing about the hot stove is they will all be answered in 48 hours time.
